Expecatations and a Class Agreement is designed to foster trust, relationships, and gain buy-in with students. They create a collaborative values system for the class. Students feel empowered and autonomous in the expectation process. Students are supported to contribute to the discussion in a variety of ways, have a voice, and have a choice. It approaches behavior and classroom management proactively and positively and it encourages positive and productive classroom behaviours, whilst establishing strong relationships with my students.
Chit Chat Time is a daily 5-10 minute break when students are given a prompt to discuss with classmates. It encourages small daily interactions that foster a sense of belonging, community, and felt safety. More than just silly questions, they support student engagement and learning while reducing conflict and disruptions. Even more, they support students to develop communication skills, social and emotional skills, that translate into better relationships amongst peers and a more collaborative class culture. Students are able to learn about each other and develop bonds in a way that's totally organic and low-pressure.
The classroom Shout Outs board is a place for students to celebrate each other. There are three times during the day that are appropriate for students to write a shout out. They can write one during morning procedures, pack-up procedures, or when they are finished with their work during class. They bring them to me, and I read them out loud at the end of the day/class. Then I staple them to the board. Students who write “happy mail” can deliver the mail to the recipient during morning procedures. They’ve mostly been doing this for people outside of our class, and it has been so sweet. It’s like having a little student sunshine committee.
Here are some of the discussions that we’ve had:
What is shout-out-worthy behavior?
What does it mean to be observant?
Who would least expect to get a shout out from you? How would it make them feel if you wrote one for them?
